There are many different types of meditation for Christians. These forms of meditation allow a Christian to feel closer to God at at peace with oneself.
Many Christians look upon meditation as an extension of prayer. Some Christians opt to meditate on a scripture, a prayer, or a religious icon. By doing a religious meditation, a lot of practitioners feel a closer connection to God. The History of Christian MeditationChristian meditation has been around since the dawn of Christianity when it was practiced by Christian monks known as Desert Fathers. This was derived in remote desert areas of Egypt where the monks wanted to dedicate their lives to continuously meditating on Jesus. Living in poverty, the monks meditated on the Hesychast prayer, also known as the Prayer of Jesus. The Prayer of Jesus MeditationThe Prayer of Jesus is very similar to a mantra whereas it is repeated over and over again. This ancient prayer is still heard in churches today: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." The Prayer of Jesus can serve as the basis for a simple meditation that Christians can perform. Merely sit down and begin breathing slowly and deeply. Folding the hands is optional. Meditation can begin by saying this prayer over and over again. The meditation can continue for as long as desired. Meditating on ScriptureSome Christians enjoy meditating on scripture. Psalms can also make for a very uplifting meditation. When doing this type of meditation, it's best to pick a scripture that has a personal meaning. While meditating, think about why you chose this particular scripture and how it has meaning for you in your life. At the end of the meditation, feel free to thank God for all that was experienced. Meditating on a CrossMeditating on a cross can be done a couple of different ways. Either an actual cross can be used or one can be envisioned in the mind. If using an actual cross, place it in front of you just below the line of sight. If envisioning one, when closing the eyes and beginning the meditation, picture a cross in your mind. It can be simple or ornate. This is completely a personal choice. Begin to take slow, deep breaths and focus on the cross. Notice every detail of it. If the mind begins to wander, just bring it back to focusing on the cross. Next, begin to see a golden light starting to surround the cross. See this light getting brighter and brighter. Feel the warmth and the divine love of this light. Now, begin to feel this glorious light surrounding you. Allow the light to become brighter and brighter as it surrounds the body. Feel the pure joy that it brings. Know that this is God's love surrounding you. When ending this meditation, take a few minutes to relax before going about your regular daily duties. The above is just a sample of different types of Christian meditation. Christians can also meditate on a prayer, a hymn, the Virgin Mary, a rosary, or many other things associated with Christianity. The focus of Christian meditation is to connect more and grow closer to God. Readers may also enjoy Mantras And Meditation, along with Religious Psalms Meditation, and Biblical Meditation. Sources:
