Using mats and cushions while meditating can bring comfort to the meditation, thus allowing an individual to be more relaxed.

Mats and cushions are popular sitting aids when it comes to sitting meditation. Cushions are particularly good for people just learning how to meditate. Mats can also be used to support the knees during kneeling meditation.

Using A Cushion For Meditation

Meditation cushions can be used on their own or placed on top of a meditation mat. Meditation cushions are known as zafus, which is Japanese for "sitting cushions." Zafus are round cushions that come in different sizes.

Zafus are usually stuffed with a fabric called kapok, which is a natural fiber that keeps its shape. In using a meditation cushion, be sure to pick a size that allows for both knees to touch the floor. Although they come in different colors, black is recommended as it is the least distracting color. This is not only for the person meditating, but for others if meditating in a group.

Using Mats For Meditation

Meditation mats add comfort for the legs and feet while meditating. They come in different sizes and colors. An important thing to consider when purchasing a meditation mat is for what purpose will it be used for. Will it only be used indoors or will it be used to meditate outside as well? This makes a difference as to what kind of fabric to consider when choosing a mat.

Another thing to think about is whether the mat will remain in one place or taken to other places to meditate. If planning to use the mat in more than one place, it is suggested to get a portable mat. Comfort is a very important factor when choosing a meditation mat. If at all possible, try several out before choosing one.

If no mats are available or if finances don't allow for the purchase of a mat, a folded blanket can work as a substitute.

Kneeling Benches For Meditation

As easy as it may sound to sit and meditate, for some, it isn't comfortable. An alternative to sitting meditation is kneeling meditation. In order to do this, a kneeling bench is recommended.

Traditionally, kneeling benches are made out of wood. The seat on the bench is sloped with the front being two inches lower than the back. It is recommended to place a cushion on the bench while meditating, although it is not necessary.

When doing kneeling meditation, place the bench on top of a cushion or mat. Sit on the bench with your knees and legs going underneath it. Be careful that the mat or cushion the bench rests on is cushioned properly to protect the knees.

Using A Blanket While Meditating

If the house is cold or you're meditating outside on a cool day, don't be afraid to wrap a blanket around yourself while meditating. If it is found to be uncomfortable, remove the blanket, but, consider wrapping it around yourself at the end of the meditation while taking a few minutes to relax.
