Svadhistana (swadhistana), the second chakra in the system of kundalini tantra, is located in the abdominal area. It is associated with the sex organs.

Tantra, as you may already know, is a spiritual path that amplifies love and connectedness with the Universe. Knowledge of the kundalini and chakras is an important part of the curriculum, along with countless other indispensable teachings that all intersect at the heart of tantra.

Some yogic paths bypass the three "lower chakras" thus avoid the senses, while concentrating on the “higher” chakras. But tantra is an all-inclusive path that honors every aspect of humanness, including sexuality and the “lower” centers. Neither age nor gender is denied in this agenda.

The functions of the second chakra deal with emotions, feelings and creativity. It affects the reproductive and sex center, including orgasms. This plexus is where most people experience what they perceive as“love,” which is based on emotions, opposed to love as a “state” of being.

Second Chakra Exercises

  • Belly Rolls – Inhale and pull the belly in and roll it up towards the chest. Exhale and expand the belly out to the front. Scoop the belly back up towards the chest again. Continue this circular movement for a few rounds. It helps to watch yourself in the mirror as you do this. Do this to some belly dance music to strengthen your abdominal muscles and clean out any inner debris.
  • Hip Circles 1 – Make a big circle with your hip. First to the right, then to the left. Try not to move any other part of your body. Move just the hips.
  • Hip Circles 2 – Same as above, but this time sway your entire body with the hips.
  • Pull the abdomen in towards the spine while taking in a deep breath. Slowly exhale through the mouth.
  • Figure 8 – Draw an imaginary sideways 8 on the floor. With your hips, follow the lines of the 8. Reverse.
  • Meditation – Lie on your back. Place your hands on your tummy. Inhale through the nose and feel your abdomen fill with air. As you exhale, your abdomen will recede and you should feel your hands gently pushing in towards your spine. As you inhale again your hands should feel the tummy expand.

Tantric mastery requires knowledge and study of the chakras, with or without a partner. So, you can do these exercises together or solo. The important thing is to do them on a daily basis.

Commitment is the key to success — no matter what it is you are trying to achieve.
